How did it all Start?
be-funk is the result of the combination of some unique musician, that
as all good things, happened with a little chance and a lot of hard
work.
It all started from the remainders of DLS (a previous project). After
the split of this univerity friends band, Yann (the lead singer) got
involved with a new guitar player who studied in Berkley. It is he who
through a lucky internet advertising, managed to recruit Tanguy (the bassist). They started to talk about developing a FUNK band. The idea was nice and intriguing, as FUNK is really something that moves the masses, and at last, a style to which audiences can easily have fun listening and dancing.
Only then, Yann decided that it was the right time to bring in one of the former univerity fellas. That is how Antonio (@ the keyboards) joined the project. They then focused on further
developing the list of covers with which to start to learn to play
together. A fantastic period, where albums from the Meters, Parliament
/ Funkadlic, James Brown and many others were reviewed and listened in
group sessions for long hours in a basement...
Once the direction was clear, the time was right to start the search for the rhythm missing link: the drummer!
One was found, passionate about tablas, and indian rhythms, and so the
first pre be-funk was born. It was not called be-funk at that time, in
fact it was not called at all. We were still striving to search for a
name that it soon became clear that there was a need for different
musicians on the guitar and on the drums.
It all started back from the 3 member root: Yann, Tanguy and Antonio.
The guitar challenge was taken over by Said, a talented man,
whereas the drums where ensured by Egil an impressive Funky
scandinavian (see Romanband and Puggy in the links).
This configuration, unfortunately, only had a limited
lifespan due to work obbligations. Because it is increasingly difficult
in Belgium to be a musician and earn a living.
So back with the 3 core member, it was through the internet that Tanguy found both missing members. Oldric (@ the guitar) joined after an evaluation session at Antonio's place. Internet finally delivered the impressive drumming of Anton (@ the drums). His machine timing and impressive experience was exactly what was missing.
I will always remember the first time we jammed in Anton's
local (mid-january 2004). There was excitement, and fun. This time we all knew that we had
it right. Since then, nothing changed, we are still together, and enjoy
playing Funk and assimilated music with the sole scope of delivering a
pleasant time where emotions span from respect to the masters such as
Otis Redding, Tower of Power, James Brown, to the souled ballads of
Prince, the new sounds of Jamiroquai and the energy of Outkast.
When I asked a person in the crowd if he liked the show, the answer was
really surprising: "I never had so much fun at a live concert in the
last few years. U guys have fun on stage, and this feeling is very
communicative, please continue as we need more of this"
So since then, this is exactly what we are doing, having fun on stage and transmit our feelings to the crowd.
Peace
